Our service ethic runs deep at Sussex, and was well demonstrated by a recent effort by our third and forth grade classes. See the full Missoulian article here.
Our students, the Missoula Strikers Soccer Club, and FedEx teamed up to provide needed athletic clothing and cleats to members of Santa Rosa United Youth Soccer Club in Santa Rosa, CA, a community that suffered extensive loss from the recent wildfires in Northern California.
While at a Santa Rosa United soccer camp in Santa Rosa, CA, Sussex Student, Lieven Syester noticed a donation drive called “Cleats for Kids” through Here for Kids International. Lieven brought this cleat drive back to Sussex School and the Missoula Strikers Club Soccer Program, and began collecting items for kids in need. During this cleat drive, devastating fires engulfed Santa Rosa, burning 47 homes to the ground of member families of Santa Rosa United Youth Soccer Club. Most families lost everything but the clothes they were wearing. This tragedy caused Lieven, Sussex, and Strikers to shift their focus to Santa Rosa United Soccer Club to help those in urgent need so they may continue their passion for soccer.
Children at Sussex School have expressed empathy and compassion for families that have been impacted by the disastrous fires that affected California this fall, and this effort is one small way can help their fellow Americans.
