There are no grades given at Sussex. Instead, we hope to develop intrinsic motivation and a love of learning by supplying a varied, authentic, project-based curriculum that allows each student to develop skills at different rates. Sussex teachers monitor a child’s development in a variety of ways.
In the classroom, there is consistent communication between the student and teacher concerning the work the child is doing. In November and April, students, parents, and teachers meet and students present their portfolios. The initial portfolio conference focuses on goal-setting for the year; the second centers around which goals have been met and what might be goals for the next year.
