Portfolios
Portfolios at SussexAt Sussex we use portfolios to conduct informative assessments of student growth. The process of informative assessment helps Sussex teachers evaluate progress while also providing us with valuable insight into the evolving interests and needs of our students. Students compile representative examples of their school work, which tell the story of their development over time. Portfolios help students think critically about their own learning (both academic and social) through self-reflection on their goals and progress. Portfolios help teachers gain insight into students and improve instruction through continued assessment of individual skill development. Portfolios are maintained from Kindergarten all the way through 8th grade; as such, they serve as crucial visual records of student growth, while also illustrating the scope and vitality of the Sussex curriculum.

Students keep their portfolios in three-ring notebooks. The portfolio and some of the selections move up with the child each year, and he or she will graduate from 8th grade with a substantial collection of work showing his or her growth throughout their tenure at Sussex. Teachers guide students in mapping goals, assembling the portfolio, and reflecting on the purpose and intention of their artwork, writings, math assignments, and books read. Though it’s not always easy for the students, this process of self-reflection is vital to the learning experience. We have found that through the practice of assembling portfolios, students greatly improve their ability to self-reflect, to discuss strengths and challenges, and to articulate how they learn. It’s a joy to see how the portfolios evolve from kindergarten to 8th grade!

Portfolios at SussexAll Sussex students present their portfolios to their parents in their twice-yearly conferences. We strive to keep these presentations comfortable but instructive. We give kids time to prepare and practice so they can celebrate their accomplishments. Teachers also comment, provide written feedback, and allow time for additional conversations with parents. Our goal is to have all subjects represented in the portfolios so that families can see the breadth of a Sussex education.

A portfolio is not a test, grade, or scrapbook. It is a valuable assessment tool, designed to recount the story of a student's development. They allow us to see the students’ learning over time, across grades and subjects. At Sussex we believe in students taking responsibility for their learning. Evaluating progress by setting goals and reviewing portfolios forms an important part of the Sussex School experience.
