Sussex going to state for MATHCOUNTS

Continuing our long tradition of success in Montana MATHCOUNTS competitions, Sussex School competed in the Western Montana Chapter event on Tuesday, February 5th, 2019. With a total of 10 students from Sussex competing on behalf of Sussex, the 4-student team of Isabella Bryant (8th Grade), Lily Miller (8th Grade), Lovis Tegeder (6th Grade), and Fox Winterer (7th Grade) placed 3rd overall and will be heading to the State Competition in Butte on March 15th.

- Sunny Charman (8th Grade)

- Elle Checota (8th Grade)

- Maizy Miller (6th Grade)

- Eve Omura (7th Grade)

- Eliza Quackenbush (7th Grade)

The many hours of hard work after school and on weekends clearly showed, as four individual placed within the top 25% of the competitors. Supporting our students as coaches were Joe Zephyrs, Sussex’s math co-lead and Bente Winston, Sussex co-founder and original MATHCOUNTS coach! Also providing coaching and support were alumni Lisa Klempay and Maddie Braun, and parent Leslie Berg.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program with the mission “to provide fun and challenging math programs to U.S. middle school students to increase their academic and professional opportunities.” The competition has several rounds, including a speed round and a team round. Students can use calculators for some problems, but not others. The Sussex team will head to the State Competition next month while our entire community continues to support them in learning new concepts and having fun during after-school sessions.
